The Bird House

Winner of the ‘Ideas for London’ competition run by the Evening Standard & Artangel, The Bird House is an aviary nestled into a gap in a typical Victoria terrace. This building-scale installation is a living one and suggests new ways of integrating nature with our cities extant. It deals with themes of social history, architecture, and the history of our interaction with birds, as well as being a place of wonder and delight. The judges panel, who included Alain de Botton and Jeremy Deller, described the proposal as “dreamlike” and “immediately likable” Co-director of Artangel, Michael Morris, said “the proposal is magical, poetic, affecting and immediately transformative”.
